The Hindu Wedding Ceremony

The Hindu Wedding Ceremony

Hindu wedding ceremonies are carried out according to shastra (scripture). With Hinduism being one of the world’s most ancient religions there are many variations of how the details of wedding ceremonies have been interpreted into practical methods.

We have, therefore, tried to explain the main rituals and the meanings behind them in order to help you understand what is done and why. It is recommended that you seek out an English-speaking priest who can meet with you and talk through his own methods, while taking yours and your fiancĂ©’s personal choices into consideration.

Ganesh puja

As with all auspicious Hindu occasions the wedding day starts with a prayer to Lord Ganesh. He is believed to be the remover of all obstacles and the Ganesh Puja is carried out to ensure successful completion for the day’s itinerary.

This normally takes place at the wedding venue under a mandap (four-post canopy) and is carried out by the bride’s parents, under instruction from your priest.

Graha shanti
Hindus believe that the stars and planets have a profound influence on the paths we take during our lifetime. The graha shanti is a prayer to the nine planets of our solar system to bless the bride and groom with inner strength, courage and peace of mind.

Again, this prayer is usually completed by the bride’s parents under the mandap.

The welcome
This is when the groom enters with his best man beside him. The bride’s mother will welcome them either at the entrance of the venue or at the top of the aisle. She then leads them into the mandap where the bride’s father will wash the groom’s feet. This may seem a little strange but the idea behind it is that on your wedding day you are the embodiment of the Lord Vishnu. So the bride’s father appeals to the goodness in you by treating you with the utmost respect.

The bride enters
Throughout the wedding morning the priest will be reciting various slokas, these are Sanskrit verses designed to engulf the surrounding atmosphere with positive energy. When the priest announces ‘Kanya padharo sawdhaan’ this is the cue for the bride to enter, escorted by her maternal uncles and whoever else she chooses to be part of her grand entrance.

It is customary in some variations of the ceremony to hold up a white cloth in front of the groom so that he cannot see the bride as she enters. The couple exchange flower garlands once the bride takes her place opposite the groom under the mandap.

Kanyadaan
This is the giving away of the bride. The bride’s parents will announce that they are entrusting you with their daughter who represents Lakshmi (the goddess of prosperity). The bride’s parents will then place her hand in yours for what is known as the hasta melap where the couple vow to accept each other in an equal partnership of love and respect.

Varmala
Not to be confused with the jaimala (flower garland), the varmala is a cord made up of 24 cotton threads – each one representing a different characteristic of human life. This will be placed around the couple as they prepare to enter into a new life together as one.

Ganth bandhan
Either the sister of the groom or the priest will tie the groom’s stole to the bride’s saree or chunni (scarf). The knot represents that they are bound to each other in mind, body and soul for the rest of their lives.

Agni puja
The priest will light a small fire in a copper vessel known as an agni kund. The fire is invoked to act as a pure and sacred witness to the vows that are to be taken by the couple.

Shilarohana
The bride places her right foot on a stone and vows to be equally as strong in order to protect and preserve the peace of her new home.

Mangal fera
The couple will circle the fire four times. Each round represents one of the four ultimate goals of life: dharma (righteousness), artha (wealth), kama (desire) and moksha (salvation).

Laaj homa
The bride’s brother brings the couple parched rice or barley which they offer into the agni kund. They will do this each time they circle the fire praying for long life, health, prosperity and happiness in return.

Mangal sutra & sindoor
The mangal sutra is a necklace that the groom will gift his bride with. It is usually made of gold with small black beads which represent the sacred union between them. You place the mangal sutra around her neck and applies sindoor (vermillion) to the parting of her hair. These are both physical symbols that make her recognisable to the world as a married woman.

Saptapadi
The couple then take seven steps together, making the following seven vows:

Let us take the first step to sharing the responsibility of providing for our household
Let us take the second step to strengthen our mind, body and soul to accomplish life’s needs
Let us take the third step to accomplish wealth and prosperity through righteous means
Let us take the fourth step to acquire happiness through mutual love, respect and trust
Let us take the fifth step to raise strong, virtuous and courageous children
Let us take the sixth step towards spiritual values and longevity
Let us take the seventh step to stay best friends in this lifelong wedlock
Aashirwad
The married couple will finally take blessings from both sets of parents and any other family elders by touching their feet.

Successful Relationship

10 Keys to a Successful Relationship

If things aren’t going too well between you and your partner, don’t you worry! Here are 10 things to keep in mind that will help you improve your relationship with your spouse and deepen the bond...

·         Spend Time Together

Take out at least half an hour from your busy schedule everyday to speak to your partner. Make it a point to spend some quality time exclusively together and go out atleast once a month. It helps, trust us!

·         Two-way Communication is Important

Communication is the key to success in any relationship. The more you communicate, the better it is for the two of you, as it helps you understand each other better. But, remember interaction implies action on both sides. Therefore, every interaction should be two-way.

·         Learn to Compromise and Adjust
There’s no harm in compromising and making some adjustments to make your relationship work. In fact, won’t it be rude if you don’t compromise in any way and every time your partner has to adjust? So, make that extra effort for your partner. Remember, a good relationship is always built on compromise and a great deal of give-and-take from both sides. Also, adjustment is part and parcel of every long-lasting relationship.
·         Continue to Compliment

In most cases, the couple complements each other only in the initial days and then it all suddenly stops. If it’s the same in your case too, start complementing your partner again and s/he will love it, trust us! The compliments should continue even after a few years of the relationship to keep the chemistry alive.

·         Don’t Try to Change Your Partner

If you really love your partner, accept him/her unconditionally. Instead of trying to change some characteristics about your partner, you have to learn to accept your partner the way s/he is.

·         Forgive and Forget

All couples have their share of ups and downs in life. If your partner has hurt you in the past and since then things have changed between the two of you, it’s best to forgive him/her. Remember, forgive and forget is the key to a better relationship. So, try this and things will soon get back on track.

·         Keep Smiling

You need to learn to do that one thing that’s most likely to restore good feelings in your relationship. Wondering what? We’re just talking about giving your partner a genuine and loving smile every time you see him/her or whenever your partner is around.

·         Speak Up

If there’s something that’s bothering you, say it. Learn to express your problems to your partner and try sorting it out at the earliest. Bottling up your feelings can only make the situation worse and affect your relationship.

·         Work Out a Budget Together

Conflicts over money matters are a common problem. How to save or how to spend is what creates fights. For a relationship to work, you have to listen to each other’s point of views. Managing finances well and paying heed to your partner’s advice is the best thing to do to avoid fights. Yes, you should make the most of your time now, but also plan for future if you really want to spend rest of your life together.

·         Every day is a New Day

Yes, we mean it, as everyday you’ll get to know something new about your partner, especially when you happen to meet someone online. Life will be full of surprises and each day will be a discovery. The typical Jain marriage consists of certain simple rituals and they criticize the practice of dowry. Marriage to the Jains is a declaration by the couple that they desire to be together for a lifetime. According to them, marriage should be grand but there shouldn't be any wastage of time or money.

Like many other communities, Jains also prefer to get their sons and daughters married within the community so that the children thus produced would follow the same dharma. So they look for a boy or a girl within their community through word-of-mouth or through newspaper matrimonial.

Though simple yet a Jain wedding has a number of pre-wedding, wedding and post wedding rituals.

Pre-Wedding Rituals

Laghana Lekhan: It is the very first ritual of any Jain wedding and is held at the bride's house. This is where the marriage is fixed. In this ritual a pooja is performed by a priest at the girl's house and the muhurat or the time of the marriage is decided and accordingly it is sent to the boy's house.

Lagna Patrika Vachan: In this ceremony, the lagan patrika vachan is read out at the boy's house at some auspicious time. This might also happen at the time of engagement. The groom then performs a Vinayakyatra puja after which the priest reads the letter.

Sagai: This ceremony, held at the groom's house, is also called the engagement ceremony. According to the rituals, the groom wears a traditional headgear, washes his hands and does Vinayakyatra Puja. After this the brother of the bride is supposed to apply tilak on his forehead. The brother also gifts him a gold ring and chain, clothes some sweets and money. Then the priest reads the lagan patrika and the groom seeks blessings from the people present there.

Mada Mandap: This ritual takes place at both the bride's and the groom's place a day or two before marriage. Here, the priest performs all the rituals.

Barati: This ritual takes place on the arrival of the groom's procession at the girl's place on the day of the wedding. Here, the bride's brother is supposed to apply tilak on the groom's forehead and give him clothes, sweets, coconut and money and then the groom also applies tilak on his brother-in-law's forehead and gives him a coconut.

Aarti: In this ritual the women at the bride's place welcome the groom by doing an aarti on him and sing the Mangala Geet.

Wedding Rituals

Phere: This ceremony is done on a pre-decided auspicious moment. Here, the bride and the groom are taken to the mandap where the girl is seated on the right of the boy and they take seven vows after which they exchange positions. This ceremony is an integral part of any wedding in India.

Kanyavaran: It is also known as Kanyapradan and this ceremony means presenting the bride to the groom by the bride's parents. While doing this, the parents or the uncle of the bride keeps one rupee and twenty-five paise and some rice on bride's right hand. And thus, the groom accepts the bride from her parents. During this, the priest pours water on the couple's hands and chants mantras thrice.

Havan: After phere, the priest chants mantras of the Peethika, Atha Gathu, Atha Nistarak, Atha Surendra, Atha Parmarajadi and Atha Paramesthi and offerings are also made. After these, the priest chants Shanti mantra nine times.

Granthi Bandhan: In this ceremony, a knot is tied of the bride's sari to the groom's shawl by a married woman. Then the couple takes four rounds of the havankund or the sacred fire and mantras are chanted by the priest. In the first round the bride leads and in the other three she follows the groom. The women sing mangal geet. After takin the seven vows, the bride sits on the left of the husband and is called Vamangi, which means being the left half of the body.

Post Wedding Rituals

After these ceremonies, the parents and the priest offer blessings to the couple. This is followed by a grand feast, which is strictly vegetarian in case of Jains. Then, the bride is bid farewell by the parents. The parents also give alms in the Jain Temples as thanksgiving for the successful marriage.
